Core concepts

The words used throughout Continuous Translations, and where to find things in the app.

A few terms come back on every page of this manual. This page explains them and shows where everything lives in the app.

The building blocks #

Organization
The workspace that holds everything: projects, teams, the glossary, members and the plan you pay for. When you create an account you get an organization of your own and become its owner.
Project
One product or piece of content you translate, for example “Mobile App” or “Help Center”. A project has one source language and any number of target languages.
Branch
A copy of the keys and translations of a project, like a Git branch. Every project has a protected main branch. See Branch workflows.
Key
One piece of text that needs translating, identified by a name such as checkout.title. A key lives on a branch. See Key names and groups.
Source text
The text of a key in the project’s source language. Translators work from it.
Translation
The text of a key in one target language. A key has one translation per language.

Translation statuses #

Every translation has a status. The editor and the review page show them like this:

Status in the editorMeaning
UntranslatedNo translation yet, or a saved draft that has not been submitted.
In reviewSubmitted and waiting for a reviewer.
Changes requestedA reviewer sent it back with a comment.
TranslatedApproved, or published directly when the project does not require review.
No sourceThe key has no source text yet, so it cannot be translated.

Only translations that are Translated (approved) are exported by default, counted in progress percentages, and pulled by the CLI. Whether review is required is a workflow setting.

People and permissions #

Everyone belongs to an organization as owner, admin or member. Access to a project comes from a project role: translator, reviewer or manager, given directly or through a team. Owners and admins are managers of every project. See Roles and permissions.

Where to find things in the app #
